As the challenges of the stay-at-home orders continue indefinitely, and we fight to stay safe during this pandemic, we are all trying to find ways to adjust to our new reality. This time at home has allowed me to discover a whole new world, right in my own backyard. The place that I had previously viewed only from afar has now become the source of adventures that I look forward to every day. What will I discover during my next backyard safari?
Haverhill provides extensive natural habitats to many creatures and is home to a wide range of wildlife. Sure, we have all seen umpteen gray squirrels and American robins in the yard, but have you ever stopped to admire their beauty or observe their routines? Have you ever watched squirrels play tag up and down a tree or seen how effortlessly robins catch worms in the soil? Have you ever stopped to listen to the many birds calling to each other or singing a song at the top of the tree? Have you ever stopped to take a closer look at the vibrant colors and markings on the plethora of birds migrating back to our area with the warmer weather? Have you ever noticed the turtles basking in the sun on the logs of the wetlands? Have you ever stopped to investigate what was rustling under the leaves in the woods? Have you ever stopped to notice the different tones of a snake’s forked tongue as it slithers by? Have you ever stopped to listen to the rhythm of a woodpecker’s drumming on a tree?
I now have a greater appreciation for our wildlife and nature that is all around us—even in my own backyard. We don’t need to leave home to have an adventure. We just need to stop and pause from life to see the world with a new perspective.
